“Love locks” are little locks on which lovers write their names.
For over 20 years, couples around the world have been attaching such locks to the sides of bridges.
After that, the couple often throws the key into the river below the bridge.
This is meant to be a symbol of the couple's love, which they hope will last forever.
No one knows for sure where this idea started. However, there are many ( 1 ).
Some people think that it started in Italy, and others think that it started in China.
Wherever it started, though, it is now a common practice in many countries.

Although the people who attach the locks think the idea is ( 2 ), they have been causing problems in a number of cities.
Paris, in particular, has been struggling with the difficulties caused by these locks.
Paris is a favorite holiday destination for lovers, so many of these visitors began attaching locks to bridges around the city.
One especially popular bridge was the Pont des Arts.
Before long, the locks on the bridge were as heavy as 20 elephants.

The ( 3 ) caused some parts of the bridge to break off and fall into the river.
In the beginning, the city council did not want to act against the custom because the council knew how much visitors liked it.
In 2014, though, two Americans living in Paris started a campaign to have the locks removed.
Many local people agreed, saying the locks were ugly and could further damage the bridge.

In 2015, the city cut all the locks from the bridge.
Many visitors have ( 4 ) this decision.
They believe that this action destroyed an important symbol of love in the city.

Every year millions of people, especially in low-income countries, die from diseases because their doctors cannot identify what is making them sick.
These diseases are caused by germs and other creatures that are too ( 5 ) to see.

Because of this, doctors must use a microscope to examine the patient's blood and identify the cause of illness.
If a doctor can quickly identify the disease and give the correct treatment, many lives can be saved.
However, microscopes are very expensive and so there are not enough of them in poor countries.
This means that patients often have to wait a long time before they can be given the right( 6 ) by their doctors.

Recently, however, a scientist in the United States, Manu Prakash, came up with a possible solution to this problem.
This is an invention called the Foldscope.
The Foldscope is a microscope made out of folded paper with a small light, lens, and battery inserted into it.
By using the Foldscope, it is possible to make something appear about 2,000 times its actual size.
Doctors can use it to examine a patient's blood sample.
In this way, they can ( 7 ) what is wrong.

The Foldscope is now being tested in three countries.
